How to Tag a Runner in Baseball: Step-by-Step
When a runner steals second, the out is won or lost in inches and milliseconds. Use this simple framework to speed up your tag and cut down on misses.
1) Be engaged with the base before the ball crosses the pitching rubber
Get into position early so your eyes are steady as the throw arrives. If you’re still running, you’re guessing. Stationary eyes catch more cleanly—and clean catches make faster tags.
2) Let the ball travel for a quicker tag path
Catch the ball deep—near your glove-side shoulder—then drop straight down. The ball moves faster than your glove; reaching out only adds time and distance.
3) Stay low and work to the back corner of the bag
Use a wide base, one knee, or two knees so the glove can get to the ground instantly. Aim to the back corner for maximum reach and to meet the slider sooner.
Shortstop & Second Base Fundamentals for Tag Plays
- Footwork: Arrive under control; avoid last-second shuffles that move your eyes.
- Glove path: Down through the tag zone—no loops, no extra reach.
- Throw reading: Arm-side tail = catch deeper; straight carry = beat it to the back corner.
- Body height: Lower body = shorter tag path, fewer under-the-glove slides.
Infield Defense Drills to Get Faster on Tag Plays
Glove-Drop Drill (reaction & path)
Partner tosses from ~15–20 ft. Catch near shoulder, drop straight down to a cone at the back-corner target. 10 rapid reps each side.
Engage-Early Drill (timing & vision)
Coach calls “rubber” as the ball reaches an overhead landmark. Infielder must be engaged with the bag before the call. Reinforces early set and quiet eyes.
Low-Base Holds (strength & consistency)
Hold wide base or one-knee posture for 10–15 seconds between reps. Builds stability so tags stay short and direct late in games.
Common Tag Mistakes and How to Fix Them
- Reaching out to catch: Let it travel; deep catch → faster tag.
- Standing tall: Drop your center of gravity so the glove reaches dirt instantly.
- Late to the bag: Use the “over the rubber” cue to be set early.
Frequently Asked Questions (Tag Plays at Second Base)
What’s the fastest way to apply a tag at second?
Catch the ball deep near the shoulder and take a straight, downward glove path to the back corner. Lower body, shorter distance, quicker tag.
Should I always reach to the back corner of the bag?
When the throw allows it, yes. If it tails into the runner, catch deeper and go straight down—don’t overreach and lose time.
How do I stop runners from sliding under my tag?
Stay low, avoid looping the glove, and get the pocket to the dirt fast. A low base and a direct glove path close that gap.
